Have you heard about the zines of the Harlem Renaissance?
Black contributions to zines are often erased from zine history in favor of white narratives. Contrary to popular belief, zines did not start with the sci-fi fanzines of the 1930s or even the riot grrrls of the 90s.
Zines actually got their start during the Harlem Renaissance, when writers like Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes distributed their work independently in what they called, at the time, “little magazines.”

This Week’s Video ▶️
⚠️ TW ⚠️ The following video contains mentions of Self-Harm
In this week’s video we’ll be exploring the topic of tattoos and self-harm through zines. While not everyone uses body modifications to self-harm, this video will dive deep into why some people do. Follow along as I read you one of my zines about my tattoo journey, discuss tattoos as an an unhealthy alternative to self-harm, and ways I grew from my troubling past by focusing on my art.
Those are all the updates for now, zine machines. Thank you 💐
